Umm Saysaban
Umm Saysaban
This Bronze Age settlement is located in a scenic setting, on a plateau overlooking Wadi Araba. Excavations of the site have revealed its significance as a settlement and two stone houses have been unearthed here (shown in the figure), giving some insight into an ancient way of life. Fire places of different sizes were found in the houses, as well as tools for daily use. These include querns for grinding grain, stone chisels and large storage jars, which would have been used for storing cereals, peas, lentils and oil. The plateau was walled and it is estimated that the population of this settlement did not exceed 80 people. Archaeologists believe that there was a nomadic aspect to this settlement and that either it was populated in summer with residents moving to the warmer climate of lower villages north of Umm Saysaban during winter, or that the people of Umm Saysaban plateau may have lived there all year round, leaving periodically for agricultural, herding and trading activities.
