The Sabra Theatre

The Sabra Theatre

This small theatre is 39 meters wide and has an inner diameter of 22 meters.  The profile drawing of the inner section of the theater shown here indicates that its 11 rows of seats could accommodate between 500 to 800 spectators.  The theatre may have been used for celebrations, social events and plays.  Its presence here indicates the importance of Sabra, which was a caravan city that would have hosted travelers moving along the trade route.    Based on the way the stone blocks, or ashlars, used to build the theatre are cut and the building technique used, the theatre and the water system can be dated to the 1st century AD.  The site continued to be used up to the Late Roman period.
