Bir Al–Arayis

Bir Al–Arayis

This was originally a Nabataean cistern with three chambers that are open onto one another where around 1.2 million litres of water could be stored.   It is 6.5-7m deep with a rock-cut staircase leading to the floor. The interior walls still retain some of the thick layer of plaster commonly found lining Nabataean cisterns and dams.     Thiscistern, along with the original dam and channel that directed rainwater into it, was restored to serve the local community living in the Beidha area.      The cistern makes maximum use of the water gathered by the large catchment area above it.
