Sabra Trail

Sabra Trail (7hrs-8hrs)

Degree of difficulty: Difficult

Situated 6.5km south of Petra, Sabra is a significant Nabataean-Roman site that served as a major caravan station and settlement. It was also deemed as an important sanctuary that developed between the first and early 4thcentury AD. The site now includes several built and rock-cut complexes, in particular a theater associated with water amenities and a hydraulic system located at the foot of Jabal Al Jathim (1,175m above sea level). Wadi Sabrah is fed by a perennial spring that gives life to this small oasis. The confluence of a secondary broad wadi created a naturally protected hill on the eastern bank of Wadi Sabrah. On the western side of the wadi, above the spring, lie the ruins of a monumental structure with large columns, which may have been a temple. On the top of the wadi embankment lies a large heap of copper slag; copper-bearing sandstone deposits, along with iron and copper ores. Found along the wadi banks, they demonstrate an important metal-working center at Petra. This trail takes you through the center of the ancient city of Petra past the main attractions before moving on to Wadi Sabra, which was a major caravan station and settlement. Along the route, you will find a theater, acropolis mount and a water catchment system, which is yet another example of how the Nabataeans were able to prosper despite the arid conditions. The Sabra trail veers off the main trail after the theater.
